This weekend your Full 9 Yards Blackburn Hawks have another pair of North Cup fixtures.
Starting off with a home match against the formidable Hull Pirates on Saturday, face off 6pm and rounding off the weekend with an away fixture with Billingham Stars. Face off on Sunday will be 6.30pm.
Hawks travelled to Hull last weekend and were on the wrong end of a 10-3 defeat.
HULL PIRATES THREE TO WATCH
Lee Haywood – Defence
A very experienced D-man, icing in the Elite League at Sheffield Steelers and over 500 EPL games icing for Sheffield Scimitars/Steeldogs and the Hull Pirates. Now in his second season in the NIHL with the Pirates. A tough uncompromising blue-liner and key player for the Pirates.
James Archer – Forward
Another key player for the Pirates having iced in the Elite League for Coventry Blaze, Basingstoke Bison and Hull Stingrays. Most of his career has been in the EPIHL/NIHL where he has played over 600 games including 6 Years at Manchester Phoenix. He has 2 Elite Championship winners medals and 2 EPIHL winners medals as well as 2 gold and 1 bronze medal at the World Junior Championships.
A fast winger who loves to score goals with over 300 to his name in his pro career.
Ashley Smith – Netminder
19 year old improving young netminder who was called into the Pirates roster after their import netminder Tomas Fucic who recently picked up a long ban.
Ashley has been back up in the Elite League for Manchester Storm and in the EPIHL for the Pirates. He iced in 11 games last season for Pirates and started this season with the Nottingham Lions before switching to the Hull outfit.
A good shot stopper who is still learning his trade and who will definitely improve with the extended ice time he is getting with the Pirates this season.
Going to be another tough weekend for the Hawks but there is no reason why they cannot pick up points. They have shown they can compete with the “big” clubs in the league if they can keep concentration for 60 minutes.
Coach Steve Duncombe said,” We have been working on a few things in training and if we execute them we will start to pick up wins. Although the scores recently have been pretty bad, the effort is there for periods of the game and if we extend that we will be in a much better position.”
Don’t forget this Saturday’s game is our Hallowe’en match and there is lots going on in the Arena on the night. Get dressed up and win a prize, plenty for the kids to do and there are food and drink offers to be had. Watch out for the return of Harry the Hawk, who will be around all evening. Say hello and have a picture taken.
See you at the rink
