Weekend Preview: Hawks Seek First Win of the Season
Your Full 9 Yards Blackburn Hawks return to league and cup action this weekend with an away North Cup tie across the border in Edinburgh against the Murrayfield Racers and a home NIHL N1 leaguematch against Sutton Sting.
Both teams are new to the Hawks with Murrayfield joining the cup competition this season after re-forming after the demise of the EIHL’s Edinburgh Capitals and with Sutton gaining promotion last season from NIHL2.
On Saturday we make the long trip to Murrayfield Racers. Racers are playing regular season league matches in the Scottish National league and have been invited to play in the NIHL Cup. After winning their first league match against North Ayrshire they travelled to Billingham Stars for a cup match last Sunday. Stars proved too strong for the Scottish outfit running out 8-2 winners. Racers goals came from Daniel Abercrombie and veteran Martin Cingel.
Sunday’s opponent, Sutton sting started their league campaign last weekend with a double header against one of the league favourites Hull Pirates and lost 8-3 at home and 10-0 in the reverse fixture on Humberside.
Coach Steve Duncombe commented, “We have had a mixed start to this seasons campaign and although we have lost both games there were many positives to take out of it. I thought we competed well against Hull and after being out-played in the first period we came back strong and gave a good account of ourselves”.
“Sunday’s performance was a bit disappointing against Solway, we played well for 40 minutes and only fell away in the third period. We will learn from this and all are well aware we must compete for the full 60 minutes. Overall I was pleased with the lad’s efforts and we will work on this in training this week and hope to give our great fans their first success of the season. See you at the game.”
