The Blackburn HAWKS are proud to announce the retirement of the #90 jersey, which will now be officially assigned to the club’s supporters.
The move is in recognition of the passion and loyalty of the Blackburn fans as the club celebrates its 25th season and is in appreciation of the noisy, colourful atmosphere created by the Hawks support, at home and on the road. This was most recently in evidence during the NIHL Moralee Conference Playoff Weekend in Dumfries, where an incredible travelling support created a ‘home-ice’ atmosphere for the players despite an agonising loss to Solway in the final.
The unique gesture opens the Hawks’ Silver Season celebrations, marking 25 seasons of hockey heritage in East Lancashire. As part of the celebrations, the club has unveiled two new jerseys, including a ‘throwback’ home uniform, drawing inspiration from the then ‘Blackburn Blackhawks’ who played their debut season in 1990-91.
The vintage look carries the Hawks 25th Anniversary crest, and a modified version of the Blackhawks logo on the right breast. It also draws on the club’s original colours of white, black and red, in traditional stripes.
The new away jersey continues the club’s recent tradition of modern, aggressive striping in Hawks black, red and gold. The unique striping pattern is designed to accentuate the speed and agility of the athletes, with streaks of colour across the chest and arms.
Hawks Player coach, Jared Owen, said: “All the players are really pleased with the new designs and we can’t wait to pull on the new jerseys and represent the club for the new season.
“Retiring the #90 jersey for the fans reflects the way all the players feel about the support we have had over the past few seasons, and the way in which Blackburn has embraced hockey for nearly a quarter of a decade.
“The fans were first class throughout all last season – they were loud and proud, home or away, win lose or draw and this is the perfect way to recognise their contribution to the success of the team and the role they will have to play this season.”
